A change in plant plans<\/a><\/h2>\n

What was slated to be a coal gasification plant near South Heart will now produce electricity, a company spokesman said Friday.<\/a><\/p>\n

What was slated to be a coal gasification plant near South Heart will now produce electricity, a company spokesman said Friday.<\/a><\/p>\n

Members
\nof the Industrial Commission of North Dakota continue to support Great
\nNorthern Project Development\/Allied Syngas Corp.\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s ongoing development
\nof the South Heart project. The commissioners prepared a letter of
\nsupport to Chairman Charles Kerr of GNPD, after discussing the project
\nat their Friday meeting in Bismarck. Commissioners have supported the
\nproject and $10 million has been committed to it, along with
\nlegislative and technical support, according to the letter.<\/a><\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u0153The
\nsite is ideally located to take advantage of the existing transmission
\ninfrastructure and GNPD\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s unique access to extensive, low-cost coal
\nreserves,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d according to the letter.<\/a><\/p>\n

The plant will be located four miles south and two miles west of South Heart and will be a<\/a><\/p>\n

coal-to-hydrogen electrical generation plant.<\/a><\/p>\n

Rich
\nVoss, Great Northern vice president, said the company asked the
\ncommission for support because it is applying for U.S. Department of
\nEnergy funding for its plant. Voss said this plant will be more
\nmarketable and is a very clean project carbon-wise. He hopes plant
\nconstruction will begin in 2011 and said permits for the 2 million
\nton-per-year coal mine are likely to be filed late this year or early
\nnext year.<\/a><\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u0153They
\noriginally were going to be a power plant, then a gasification plant
\nthen a coal-drying plant, so the next logical attempt will be
\nelectricity,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d said Mary Hodell, a member of Neighbors United, a
\ncitizen-awareness group based out of South Heart. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153I don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t know what is
\nleft.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/a><\/p>\n

Voss
\nsaid Great Northern and GTL Energy, a company seeking to operate a coal
\nbeneficiation plant also near South Heart, are independent companies.<\/a><\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u0153We
\nare not working together,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Voss said. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153We will use their technology in
\nour plant when they build it and prove that it works, but we won\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t use
\ntheir equipment.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/a><\/p>\n

The cost to build Great Northern\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s plant is estimated at $1 billion.<\/a><\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u0153The
\ncounty does have a comprehensive plan that is in place to protect the
\nlivelihood of the people and it would be nice if that was followed,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d
\nHodell said.<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Are we going to let them get away with this?  I love it when my
\nhunches are right, but I hate it when anyone has the audacity to
\npropose something so utterly stupid as this.  It will be hard for them
\nto get it up and running… except who has a power plant application
\nready to rock (except that it’s a joke, but it takes some time to prove
\nthat to the PUC)?  Drat… and here I thought Tom would be down in
\nHonduras trying to build Mesaba down there…<\/p>\n
